"I wasn't running from Jesus-- I was just worn out by the way we were doing church."
After decades in ministry—including growing churches, planting churches, and even walking away from it all— I discovered something simple and powerful: Church can feel like family again.
Today, I help pastors, leaders, and everyday believers start house churches and rediscover what Jesus intended all along— life together.
It begins with our simple "All the Things" framework.
The striving and chasing so many of us experience in our culture-- even in church and ministry-- is a desperate hustle for the things we all want, the things we were designed for. The message of grace is that we don't achieve these things, but-- rather-- we receive them.
Everything Lost Is Restored
Light
Grace transfers us from Dark to Light, to a mind renewed in truth.
Life
Grace takes us from Death to Life, a soul resurrected by the Spirit.
Love
Grace transforms us from Division to Love, a heart rewired for selfless connection.
Faith doesn't have to be complicated to be meaningful.
You just need to focus on the right things. You need to stop achieving and begin receiving.
Who this is for?
✅ Pastors or church staff leaders who are burned out by buildings, budgets, and bureaucracy... who are tired for counting "nickels and noses" and prefer to see true transformation
✅ People who love Jesus, but feel the "typical" church model feels stagnant or stale... and wonder if what church has become is really what Jesus envisioned for us
✅ Small group leaders who want a plan that "works" without feeling either "stuffy and structured" or "footless and frazzled"
✅ Those who've dreamed of gathering others in their home but aren't sure how to begin
✅ Believers who want to build community and connection-- not just a crowd
Jesus spent more time at the table than He did the temple...
It makes complete sense when I look back at my own story.
I grew up in a Bible Church—non-denominational, rooted in Scripture, and rich in faith. My dad served as an elder, and both my parents led the missions ministry.
Every Sunday, missionaries from around the world would sit at our lunch table, and I’d listen, wide-eyed. Those moments sparked a lifelong love for missions and ministry.
Still, I didn’t plan to be a pastor— I was on a path toward becoming a lawyer.
When the youth pastor at my home church left, I stepped in to help "until they found someone who knew what they were doing."
That six-week volunteer stint stirred something deep in me. I realized ministry wasn’t just a fill-in gig— it was my calling.
I dropped the law school plans and enrolled in Southeastern Bible College, eventually earning a degree in Pastoral Theology.
Honestly, I didn’t have a dramatic moment of doubt, but I did wonder...
🤔 Am I really called?
💭 Am I equipped for this?
I hadn’t trained for this. I wasn’t chasing a pulpit— I just wanted to help. But sometimes, calling looks like availability before clarity.
My former youth pastor, the one who shaped so much of my worldview, had become the senior pastor at my home church. He became my mentor again, this time in ministry.
His example helped me find my voice—a voice rooted in biblical study but delivered with down-to-earth clarity.
I served as youth pastor for 10 years. The ministry grew in both numbers and depth.
But something gnawed at me: students were graduating, but they weren’t sticking around for Sunday church. It felt stale to them.
With the blessing of the church, Tammy and I launched something new—a church that felt fresh, contemporary, and real. The teaching was biblical but relatable. People connected—and the church grew fast.
But with growth came pressure.
Leadership tensions boiled over. I found myself in a hostile situation and made the painful decision to resign. I still loved Jesus deeply—but I was done with organized church.
💔 Burned out.
💔 Frustrated.
💔 Wounded.
During that in-between season, God began to stir a new vision in me— BeRefreshed.
It came from Proverbs 11:25: “He who refreshes others will himself be refreshed.”
I dreamed of church being simple again— not in a bad way, but in a daily life kind of way. We began meeting in homes, serving our neighbors, and rediscovering simple community.
Then my neighbor—an assistant pastor—kept inviting me to his church. I wasn’t interested, but he was persistent. I finally went.
Eighteen months later, I was the senior pastor.
The church was deeply in debt. We sold the building, rebranded as Restoration Church, and moved into a storefront.
We focused on tutoring local kids, feeding the hungry, and hosting creative community events like Juke Joint nights for seniors.
It was raw, but it was real.
For the first time in a while, I felt purpose again. We weren’t trying to impress anyone— we were trying to serve.
☕️ We drank coffee with our senior adults.
🎸 We played country gospel music.
✝️ We laughed, cried, prayed.
💜 Church started to feel like family again.
Then came COVID. Our worship leader passed away. Our landlord raised the rent. The denomination sold the building.
We weren’t going to buy a building again— so we moved church into our home.
And surprisingly… it felt right.
We’ve been a house church ever since.
Smaller, yes— but stronger.
Simpler, but deeper.
We eat together, worship together, talk honestly, and share life.
We also launched Simple Gatherings—backyard events with a meal, live music, teaching, and real conversation. It’s exactly what we’d dreamed about when BeRefreshed was just a seed.
Now I’m on a mission to help others— especially pastors and burned-out believers— discover what we’ve found. Church doesn’t have to be complicated to be meaningful.
I’ve created resources, tools, and a course to help you start your own house church or gathering. If you're tired, jaded, or just longing for something real— I believe there's a better way.
And I’d love to walk with you into it.
